WHAT IS ANISE?

Anise is different from Fennel although the two do have a similar flavor, and the plants are similar looking. They are both from the same family of plants – but are different species.ies. The seeds are small, brownish-gray in color, and slightly curved.

HOW IS ANISE USED?

Anise has a licorice flavor, that is sweet, mildly spicy, and very aromatic, due to the organic compound called Anethole. The anethole is very soluble in alcohol but only slightly soluble in water. As a result, when you add water to liqueurs that contain anise extract, the drink turns cloudy. This is known as the Ouzo Effect.

The seed is used in either whole or ground in many European, Mediterranean, and Middle Eastern cuisine. It can also be used by adding it to the dough for baked goods, and ground meat before baking. Anise extract is also commonly used to flavor drinks such as coffee or hot chocolate, and even to brew a licorice-flavored tea.
